Style : Interview

5 Minutes with Nick Wooster

You may know Nick Wooster by his masculine, sartorial dress – a king on the mens street style circuit. But flawless style isn’t his only attribute. The 55 year old New Yorker has worked for some of America’s biggest luxury retails chains and designers. During Mr Wooster’s last visit to Australia with Vittoria we caught up for a quick chat.

What does luxury mean to you?
Luxury to me is the ability to have options.

Working as an international buyer for Barney’s New York and sportswear buyer at Bergdorf Goodman, how have you witnessed the male consumer evolve?
Highly disruptive events like the rise of social media and of course the global financial crisis, have forever changed the way men view the world. It has made them more interested in how they look, turned them into savvy shoppers and most importantly allowed them to feel more confident when expressing individuality. Part of this comes from a survival instinct, but mostly men simply found enjoyment in fashion

Is there a US up-and-coming men’s designer you are excited about? And an Australian?
I am excited by anyone who does something cool and changes the way we view fashion. In the US, Public School would be one of my top choices and in Australia, I really loved what Song For The Mute are doing.

Can you lend some advice to our male readers who are looking to invest in timeless pieces yet remain stylish?
Always buy the very best you can afford and make sure it fits impeccably. Fit is always the great equalizer. If it looks perfect on you, it doesn’t matter how much you spent. I also am a big fan of monochromatic dressing. Pick one colour and keep it consistent. You will never go wrong, I always say wool is the cornerstone of a man’s wardrobe. A great wool suit or sweater will never go out of style.

Can you share with us your favourite travel destinations?
Of course now Australia and another personal favourite is South Korea.
