Model Megan MacKenzie radiates beauty, with distracting good looks and an earthy, free-spirited disposition. Originally from Scottsdale, Arizona, the brunette goddess has traveled all over, kickstarting her modeling career in Tokyo at a young age. We caught up with Megan on a recent foggy morning in Santa Monica to discuss her work ethic, love for her hometown and her attraction to spontaneity.
HOW WERE YOU FIRST INTRODUCED TO MODELING?
I refused scouts multiple times unsure I wanted to model and I became open minded in my last year of high school giving it a chance with an agency in Arizona. Soon after, I was scouted by agents from Japan and New York. I left for Tokyo on my first day after graduation. I’m so grateful I was opened to a world that I could make money and also be educated by culture, people and all the new experiences geographically. I then continued to ride the wave, now having contracts in Tokyo, Hong Kong, Singapore, NYC, Los Angeles, Sydney, London.
TELL US WHAT’S SO SPECIAL ABOUT WHERE YOU GREW UP?
My family is there for one. The weather is incomparably beautiful eight months of the year, the summer we would usually spend in California, escaping the heat. Most of the years we spent outdoors, hiking the red mountains. We could drive to a lake and then travel two hours where you could snowboard! We took a lot of road trips through the desert. I absolutely loved riding horses or taking my brothers to shoot cans.
DO YOU HAVE ANY PASSIONS OUTSIDE OF MODELLING?
I’m passionate about trying new things all the time and exploring new places. I am also passionate in all the different aspects of art and being a creative.
DO YOU HAVE A PARTICULAR STRATEGY WHEN IT COMES TO JUGGLING WORK AND LIFE?
Whether I’m working or not, I try to keep a 9 to 5 focus, Monday through Friday keeping productive in any way possible. You can have a lot of free time here and there, so you have to create your own discipline and not get distracted. I am very social and active so I manage to balance friends, family and work pretty well.
I’m so grateful I was opened to a world that I could make money and also be educated by culture, people and all the new experiences geographically.
HOW DO YOU PREPARE FOR A DAY IN FRONT OF THE CAMERA. ANY PARTICULAR THINGS YOU DO TO STAY ON POINT?
A day before a shoot, I drink lots of water, train, eat healthy meals and make sure I get 8 hours of sleep.
WHAT OR WHO ARE YOU CURRENTLY INSPIRED BY?
My inspirations change all the time. People who are unapologetically themselves, they inspire me. I am also often inspired by the 70’s era in music, fashion, etc.
WHEN DATING, WHAT KEEPS YOU INTERESTED?
Guys who make me laugh, who have depth, are well traveled, like adventure, and being spontaneous.
WHAT IS ONE OF THE BIGGEST MISTAKES A GUY CAN MAKE ON THE FIRST DATE?
Talk about themselves the whole time. That’s always a red flag.
