The MJ Bale Man with designer and director Matt Jensen

After selling Herringbone in 2009 Matthew Jensen (M.J.), soon moved on to establish another business and, inspired by the farm bales of superfine wool and cotton, and an intention to use only the best local fabrics, M.J.Bale was born.

Tell us a little bit about the M.J. Bale man?
The M.J. Bale man is an Australian that travels often. He wears clothes for function, but appreciates high quality garments that last. He plays or follows sport. He likes to dress well but is rational and logical about what he chooses to wear. If it’s cold, he wears a jumper and if it’s warm, he wears shorts. He doesn’t take himself too seriously, enjoys a laugh, and is always a gentleman when it comes to the ladies. If in doubt, he’ll wear a tux.

Where did the origin of M.J. Bale come from?
M.J. Bale came about from a desire to provide the best value menswear in Australia, and to become a champion of Australian wool as a raw material. For years the Australian customer had only the choice of over-priced international brands, or relatively lower quality Australian labels. We actively sought to provide the Australian male with high quality garments that fit well, were reasonably priced, and could compete in design and quality with other premium international menswear labels. Growing up on the land, I had been surrounded by wool as a child, and could see an opportunity to restore ‘the nations fibre’ to its former glory. By working with Australian Wool Innovation, we are promoting and re-educating the Australian male about the benefits of an 100% Australian Superfine Merino wool suit.

You dress many Australian sports stars such as the Australian Cricket Team. Why does M.J. Bale work so well with sporting physiques?
We believe we have created a silhouette that works for the majority of Australian men, not just those with sporting physiques. By working closely with our trusted supply chain partners around the globe, we have been able to develop suiting blocks that complement both the everyday Australian male, as well as those who are still active on the fields, at the beach or in the gym. It is all about fit, form & function. For those looking for a more particular fit, we also offer a fully made and hand-finished in Japan custom suiting service.

We believe very strongly in creating clothes for our customer, rather than what is a trend or in fashion.

Why do you think M.J. Bale resonates so well with the Australian man?
We believe very strongly in creating clothes for our customer, rather than what is a trend or in fashion. We work closely with our customers by implementing their feedback on what we are doing well, what we can improve and what they would like to see in the range. We believe in creating garments that look and feel great, will last, and continue to look good in 10 years’ time.

What do you think is the key to finding perfect tailoring?
Quality of materials, quality of construction, and the quality of the person fitting the suit. Ask where the wool is from and its grade – is it 100% Superfine merino wool? The quality of construction – does the jacket have a floating canvas, are the seat of the trousers re-enforced etc. The person conducting the fitting is also very important, and it is completely acceptable to look at the suit and ask questions – Does it fit well and is the fitter knowledgeable about the product? A good fitter satisfies these criteria.

Who are your style icons?
I’m torn between Steve McQueen and Red Foo. To quote a great friend & customer of ours… who happened to play hooker for the Wallabies “If it’s not tight, it’s not right… taper it again Sam”.
